6.2 Awareness that IP Protects Staff as well as University
The protection of intellectual property is vital, not merely because of a desire for commercial gain, but because the protection of intellectual property is often vital if basic research is to be developed. In turn, that will support the further investments and marketing on its way into the community. While that aim is certainly important in the practical application of the University's research and for creating an income for UWA to support further research, UWA's staff and students have a particular interest in protecting intellectual property.
Particularly in the case of patents, failure to take proper steps to protect an invention may mean that another person may file a patent application covering the invention (if no publication has yet occurred) and consequently exclude the original inventor from being able to use his own invention. This idea is explored more fully in Article 2 ("Patents - Requirements and Publications").
In addition, intellectual property may be a direct asset to the creator, partly because the creator may derive some income if it is successfully exploited, but mostly because there is increasing recognition by universities and granting bodies for achievements represented by intellectual property. The Research Unit Publications Database makes provision for patents and recognises the high quality research that patents usually indicate. |
